Dieppe Exchange Revived
Our Council Member Pat Richards writes: “On Friday 4th October, represented by our President Jacqueline Hardaway, Past President and accredited Mediator Kevin Smyth and myself, the Sussex Law Society welcomed a delegation of 40 Lawyers from northern Normandy, essentially from Dieppe, Rouen, Evreux and Le Havre, to their “away day” Mediator training seminar in Brighton. We had facilitated their stay at The Old Ship Hotel. This part of their course concentrated on cross –border Mediation with the UK and with the assistance of a CEDR official interpreter, Kevin delivered a very informative and much appreciated Presentation. The three of us enjoyed a very convivial lunch with our guests, who included three District Law Society Presidents (“Batonniers”) from the above cities.
After much rehearsing I delivered the welcoming address in French and Jacqueline, who had travelled over from Uckfield, added grace and formality to the proceedings by inviting them and their colleagues to return to our shores for a social reunion next year. It was hoped that this initiative would resurrect the annual exchanges of years past and we were not to be disappointed. The indication was that, insofar as the Dieppe Bar was concerned, they would establish when in the new year they would be celebrating their own annual French Lawyers’ Patron Saint St. Yves, a benevolent Brittany Lawyer (sic), in the Church of St. Remy . Such a date could only be arranged via the Bishop but sufficient Notice would be given to us for such an invitation, to coincide with other activities. Together with seven other local Solicitors, all fully robed, I enjoyed this impressive experience three years ago”
