AGM

12th October 2017

Congratulations to Emma Weir who was elected President at last night’s AGM at the Old Ship Hotel in Brighton, taking over the mantle from Jonathan Grant after serving on the Society’s Committee for the past 4 years.  Emma is a partner in Griffith Smith Farrington Webb working in the private client team at their Hassocks office,

Emma thanked Jonathan Grant for doing a fantastic job in his year as President and said that she hoped to emulate him in the forthcoming year.  She told those members present that the main reason she had got involved with the Society was to have an opportunity to meet other lawyers in a relaxed setting.  She said that she had been impressed at how much the Committee cared about serving its members well by providing local social, networking and training opportunities as well as keeping members connected.  Turning to her plans for the year, Emma said that her main focus would be to get the Society’s message ‘out there’ through a much greater use of social media and to support and encourage younger members of the profession by, among other initiatives, working more closely with the recently revived local JLD.

Emma concluded by saying that, although the profession faced many challenges ahead, she wanted to remind members about the joy of being a lawyer and to encourage younger members with this message.

Jackie Gillespie, Managing Partner of Quality Solicitors Howlett Clarke in Brighton, was elected Vice President and Holly Goacher of PDT Solicitors in Horsham and Simon Rozzier of Griffith Smith Farrington Webb in Brighton were elected to the General Committee.  We also said goodbye to Kevin Smyth, last year’s Immediate Past President and, co-opted member for many years, Hugo Hunt from the General Committee.  Hugo has served the Society in many capacities over the years, including being President in 2002/3 and his experience, wit and wisdom will be greatly missed by all!

The meeting was followed by a Ghost Walk of Brighton which, hopefully, has not put too many members off walking through the Lanes alone at night !!  and ended with some lovely Tapas at Casa Don Carlos.
